As entrepreneurs, life can be lonely, misunderstood. I am with you on this. I believe entrepreneurship is a privilege you’re given or rather you’ve chosen. Whether you were an employee who moved over to take an entrepreneurship journey or decided to be one from the start of your career. Now, why do I say that it's a journey   because it is a journey. It's a journey that shakes you and makes you a better leader. I am a big fan and believer of leadership. As we say internally in our organisation 'everything rises and falls on leadership' – John Maxwell. As an entrepreneur, it is your responsibility to lead yourself and lead people around you, your team, your clients, and even your family.

My husband and I both run the company, Business Sherpa. We don’t always have best days, but most of the days are great and fulfilling. Something that we do as a practice is to take a break, we call it ‘retire a little’. Simply because as entrepreneurs we never really retire, we will keep going. So, retire now and whenever you want, Take a break!

I want to share, why should you take a break or retire a little. Why is it important? Breaks can help you rest, rejuvenate and help you think clearly about your business and work on your business. Note that I mention about 'working on the business', as we work day to day we are in tuned to get into the daily rut and run on the usual treadmill and it seems almost natural. It can seem like that’s how it supposed to be because it’s hard to think outside of what’s happening inside the business- my team is not ready? I need to be involved in sales! I CAN’T TAKE A BREAK!

Now, I don’t think you should leave all your work and just decide to go on a holiday. There are times it is important to bring forth all that is required to grow your business. The question is can you design your break time that doesn’t impact your business and you also take the time to work on your business. Design can be as simple as taking a half a day break – go for a movie, meet a friend, physical rest and a couple of hours of working on the business, reflect on what is really working and not working in your leadership, with your team or how you serve your client better and so on. Go ahead and design it. Start with a half a day, pick a day you want to take a break and then design a holiday with your family or by yourself. We take a break every quarter and go somewhere. Pick a place that you would like to travel in the next 90 days and put that as a challenge and give yourself a business goal, that can inspire you to playfully in the business and earn your holiday.

As entrepreneurs, if you don’t take care of yourself, you won’t be able to take care of your people. Your responsibility is to serve your team, your client and your family…but most importantly yourself!
