The Indian Prime Minster Narendra Modi, in his special address to the nation today, urged citizens to practice even greater self-discipline to combat the coronavirus pandemic. As an example of this self-disciple he called for a ‘janta curfew’ on March 22, 2020 to be self-imposed by every citizen from 7:00 am to 9:00pm on the day.
To honour the countless health workers, airport staff, police force and government officials that are working round the clock to contain COVID-19, the PM declared that at 5pm on 22 March all citizens clap and cheer from their respective home doorways and windows for five minutes.
The PM stated that protecting ourselves from getting infected and protecting others is imperative, for if we are healthy, the nation will be healthy too. He reiterated that it is prudent to avoid crowds and practice social distancing. The PM urged senior citizens to be especially cautious. He further confirmed that the government was taking adequate measures to ensure regular supply of food and essential items, and citizens must therefore not indulge in panic buying or hoarding.
To deal with the economic challenges, the COVID-19 Economic Response Task Force has been formed under the leadership of the Finance Minister.
To ensure that hospitals do not face undue pressure, the PM suggested citizens delay their routine check-ups and elective surgeries and in case of minor ailments consult their family doctors on call.
Talking about the economic impact of COVID-19, the PM said that small businesses, daily wage earners and the poor are perhaps the most vulnerable. To deal with the economic challenges, the COVID-19 Economic Response Task Force has been formed under the leadership of the Finance Minister.
Praising the contributions of hospital staff, cleaners, home-delivery services, media and government services, the PM stated that they are the real heroes of our time, that are working tirelessly to safeguard the country, often at great peril to themselves. The nation owes them an immense debt of gratitude.
