In conversation with GlobalLinker (GL), Dr Bangera shares his entrepreneurial journey.

GL: Dr Bangera, you have more than two decades of experience as a General Practitioner (GP) and in various other capacities in the healthcare sector. What motivated you to start Aileen?

Dr Bangera: Entrepreneurship is not what I originally envisioned as my calling. As a General Practitioner (family physician), I offered free service to defence personnel, teachers, kin of physicians, poor patients and the elderly. I have 28 years of work experience in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sector. I have bid for business from the western world, raised several companies from being the first employee, spent long hours of commute, dealt with arrogant bosses and political colleagues, until I finally decided to be my own boss, and fix the problems that I faced as an employee.

I established Aileen with the purpose of helping transform innovative pharmaceutical, biotechnology, cosmetic and medical device technology or product into a commercial reality. In addition, I also mentor students and faculty who are into innovation of medical technology products from IITs and other basic science research institutes.

GL: What has been the most effective way of raising awareness about your business?

Dr Bangera: Knowledge about the healthcare sector, care for patient safety, and being ethical is the hallmark of our business. Word of mouth and a rich website have helped us raise awareness about our business.

GL: As a startup what is the primary challenge you face?

Dr Bangera: My business is people-based. A client always wants to know how many people are around to handle their projects. However, the problem is how long do I keep people on the payroll and wait for the business! It’s the chicken or egg story. But there are projects that need my expertise primarily, and I successfully take these on.

GL: What is your leadership mantra?

Dr Bangera: Quality, patient safety, being ethical and data integrity is what my business demands. I drive that from the top down. I prefer delegating work to juniors after discussing how the work needs to be handled and leave them to it with doors open for them to come back to me if they hit a roadblock along the way. I have always preferred hiring just out of college graduates, so that they learn and grow with the organisation.

GL: What advice would you give to a new entrepreneur setting up their first business?

Dr Bangera: If you have the flair for entrepreneurship, you should jump in, but never compromise on statutory requirements (paying taxes, filing returns, keeping legal requirements up to date); watch expenses, buy quality products, don’t encourage piracy, and keep eyes and ears open (meet people).

GL: We would love to know the person behind the entrepreneur.
